FV Courage (BF212) was a well-known Scottish purse seiner a type of fishing boat that uses a large net to encircle schools of fish, built in 1974. The letters “BF” in its registration number stand for Banff, a historic fishing port in northeast Scotland.
Key History and Modifications The vessel underwent several major changes and extensions over its lifetime to upgrade its capabilities: The Beginning (1974): Built by the famous shipyard Hall, Russell & Co Ltd in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was originally commissioned for George, David, and Brian West of Banff. At the time, it featured a Lister Blackstone diesel engine. First Expansion (1977): Modified at the Maaskant shipyard in Stellendam, Netherlands. It was fitted with a protective shelter deck, three Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) tanks to keep fish fresh, and lengthened to 30.24 metres. Second Expansion (1988): Returned to Maaskant in Stellendam. This time, it received a raised “whaleback” bow to deflect heavy waves, a brand new wheelhouse, and was lengthened again to 35.14 metres. Change of Hands (1996): The boat was sold to buyers in Norway, where it was converted into a trawler and renamed Fairy (H-12-B).
